Dr. Shea is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, who earned an Associates of Arts from Brookdale Community College, and a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from Rutgers University. Dr. Shea served as a member of the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Shortly after earning his bachelor’s degree, Dr. Shea joined the Long Branch (N.J.) Police Department as a police officer. He was assigned to various units including the Patrol Division, Investigations Bureau, and Street Crimes Unit. During this period, he attained his Master of Public Administration from Seton Hall University.

In 2004, Dr. Shea was promoted to sergeant and was once again assigned the Patrol Division, this time as a road supervisor. In 2007, he was promoted to lieutenant and assigned as the Internal Affairs Commander, where he served nearly seven years. He was later assigned as the Assistant Patrol Commander, where he monitored the supervision of 70 officers in three platoons, until his retirement in early 2017. During his police career, Dr. Shea received numerous commendations.

In 2015, Dr. Shea earned his doctorate in Civil Security Leadership, Management, and Policy at New Jersey City University, focusing his dissertation on police executive leadership. Dr. Shea has been an adjunct professor at two separate universities before joining Centenary’s faculty.
