Professor Kathy Turrisi was born and raised in Huntington, Long Island, NY. She received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in Business from the University at Albany, NY. While working full-time as a teacher in New York, she continued her studies at Dowling College where she received a Master’s of Science in Education. Her course work focused on mathematics and reading, while her teaching career was focused on Secondary Education.
Kathy has held numerous teaching positions and has taught a wide variety of students from pre-school to adults. These broad experiences included responsibility for the math curriculum in public schools, director and instructor at several nationally recognized learning centers, developing hands-on manipulatives for use in classrooms, training teachers, and studying oversees in China to learn the language and culture and to research alternative approaches to learning mathematics.
Kathy began her career at Centenary as an Adjunct Mathematics Instructor in the Fall of 1999. At the start of the 2004-2005 school year, she began working as a full time faculty member and was the Director of Developmental Mathematics in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department. In this capacity, she also specialized in teaching students to overcome obstacles such as test anxiety, and fear of failure of learning mathematics at the college level.
In 2006, started Kappa Mu Epsilon (a National Mathematics Honor Society), and co-wrote and co- taught CCS100: CSI-Hackettstown (Centenary Students Investigate Hackettstown), which was a freshman experience course. In addition to her teaching duties, she is pursuing her Doctorate of Education at Walden University.
In 2007, Professor Turrisi was awarded the Centenary Distinguished Teaching Award. This award recognizes her outstanding accomplishments in teaching.
