The Centenary University Theatre Program offers students the unique opportunity to study abroad through the University’s School of International Studies Program. There are numerous exchanges available all over the world. Of particular interest to our theatre students is our connection with two institutions; J. F. Oberlin University in Tokyo Japan and the University of Roehampton in London England and their Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies program. Oblerlin University offers majors in four fields of the arts: theater, music, visual arts, and film. While they stress the distinctiveness of each of these fields, students learn to develop a broad artistic perspective through mutual interchange between the fields. Students can transcend the boundaries of the four majors by creating joint works, and in the process, stimulate the growth of their creativity. Classes are in English.
The University of Roehampton program offers an exceptional academic team who have international reputations as performance makers, writers, visual artists, curators, historians, critics and theoreticians. As a student you will work closely with staff on courses that combine the best of practice-led and theoretical approaches to the subject. To complement your studies, the Department hosts a stimulating range of events, theatre visits, and seminars, and supports and encourages the student society of arts and performance (SSOAP) as well as an all-campus society, the Roehampton Players. The London theatre scene is a vibrant, exciting and dynamic place to experience the best in professional theatre.
Taking a semester abroad can be a life changing experience. Centenary is proud to be able to offer you that opportunity to study and grow as an international student.
“The Study Abroad experience is like no other; you as a student and person grow so much. The different teaching styles give you a diverse approach to the arts. I believe that every student, no matter what major should study abroad to get that experience.” Ameer Copper
“Studying abroad was the best part of my college experience. I was able to learn about and see great theatre right in the heart of London.” Alexandria Holbrook
“I knew that if I was going to study abroad it was going to be in London, one of the major theatre capitals of the world. The fact that Centenary offered a program in partnership with the University of Roehampton felt like fate. I watched Macbeth on the floor of the Globe Theatre, caught the newest plays on the West End, and dived into an opportunity to perform a few works with my fellow classmates.” Morgan Mack
Living in Tokyo, Japan for a semester through Centenary University has impressed upon me in an immeasurable way. The Japanese classes at J.F Oberlin University were in English and I was able to learn a lot about the culture in a short time. Learning Japanese was rewardingly difficult and I have been able to use the language and cultural knowledge throughout my career. I have growing relationships with some friends and families that I’ve met there. I left Japan feeling confident that I would return and that it would embrace me. I went back in April of 2017 and Japan was waiting with open arms. Leon Hill
