Scholarships are made available to Centenary students through the generous contributions of donors and friends of Centenary University. These scholarships are awarded by the University. There is no separate application process associated with the awarding of these awards unless indicated otherwise.


Arden Davis Melick ’60 and Bernice Spies Davis ’31 Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by generous donations from Chairman of the Board of Trustees Arden Davis Melick ‘60 in memory of her mother, Bernice Spies Davis, class of ’31. In 2006, the Centenary Board of Trustees elected Ms. Melick chairman. Ms. Melick is the longest serving member of the Board of Trustees, and she is the first alumna/us to serve as chairman of the board. She is also the first woman to hold this position. Ms. Melick is also member of Centenary’s President’s Circle. Her mother, Bernice Spies Davis, was a member of the first graduating class of Centenary’s Junior College and national president of Centenary’s Alumni Association.

The scholarship recipient will be selected from students in the top 20% of their class, with preference given to a female New Jersey resident.

Beal-Sargent Endowed Scholarship

This award is made possible by a generous donation from Susan Beals Sargent ’65. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to a student who exhibits both merit and need and is acquiring a degree in Education. Bertha Florey Sloan Scholarship in Business

The Bertha Florey Sloan Scholarship in Business is made possible by the generous support of Dr. Harold Sloan, in memory of his wife, Bertha Florey Sloan, Class of 1905. Dr. Harold Sloan met Bertha Florey while they both attended The Centenary Collegiate Institute. Upon Bertha Florey’s graduation, Harold left at the same time for further schooling. Shortly after Bertha’s death in 1979, Dr. Sloan established the Bertha Florey Sloan Scholarship Fund. Following the death of his brother, Raymond Paton Sloan, Dr. Sloan established a scholarship in his name as well.

Catapano Family Community Service Endowed Scholarship

This award is made possible by the generous donations from Michael Catapano ’92, and his wife, Kimberly Elliott Catapano ’91. Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by a generous donation from the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation dedicated to women who have exhausted other sources of funding but who are close to realizing their academic goals and beginning a new career.

The scholarship recipient will be selected from students with financial need who are at least 25 years of age and who have completed at least half of the requirements for their degree. A majority of the funds from this Foundation will be directed to undergraduate women enrolled in a four-year degree programs. However, awards may be made to women enrolled in second bachelor’s degree programs and certificate programs. The Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship may be awarded to women enrolled in master’s degree programs; however, it must be clear that the degree is necessary to enable the candidate to gain employment or maintain or improve her employment situation.

Diane “DD” Sillcocks ’54 Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the generous donations received from and on behalf of Mr. Warren B. Sillcocks ’01 HA, in memory of his wife, Diane “DD” Sillcocks ‘54, a former member of the President’s Circle and the Alumni Association Executive Board. DD amazed everyone with her enthusiasm for Centenary and her ability to translate it into action. DD was a model “ambassador” for Centenary and worked tirelessly to promote the university among its alumni.

Doris L. Moore Award

This award is made possible by the generous support of Dr. Sandra Moore and her brother, Peter Moore, in memory of their mother, Doris L. Moore. Ms. Moore was an elementary art teacher who upheld the highest standards for herself and her students.

The scholarship is awarded to a rising Junior or Senior with at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA in an Education major who exemplifies dedication to education and students.

Douglas Wolfe Turrell Memorial Community Service Award

This scholarship is made possible by generous donations from Sally Wolfe Turrell ‘52 and her family in memory of the loving son, Douglas Wolfe, who was attending college when he passed away in 1993.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to continuing students who excel in community service, this having been one of Douglas’ primary interests. Elaine Stewart Tyrrell Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by generous donations from Arthur D. Tyrrell, Jr. and other donors. These gifts are given in honor of Arthur’s wife, Elaine Stewart Tyrrell, who passed away from ALS in 2013. Elaine graduated from West Morris Central High School in 1984, Stockton State College with her B.A. in criminal justice in 1988, and William Paterson College with her M.A. in social sciences in 1995. In 1988, Elaine was hired by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, where she met her loving husband, Arthur. In 1993, Elaine was promoted to detective and graduated from the police academy. Elaine retired from the Prosecutor’s Office as a Detective Sergeant in June 2013. In addition to being an active volunteer within her community, Elaine was a member of Centenary’s part-time faculty. Elaine often expressed her love for teaching at Centenary.

The recipient must be a senior majoring in Criminal Justice and who demonstrates the desire and intent to pursue a career in Criminal Justice.

Elizabeth Dickinson Dunlap Scholarship

The Elizabeth Dickinson Dunlap Scholarship is made possible by the generous donations from Elizabeth Dickinson Dunlap ’44 and her family. At the time Elizabeth was attending, both of her parents were deceased and scholarship assistance was what allowed her to attend College. This scholarship was established to thank Centenary for the educational opportunity and to make it possible for others to enjoy a similar Centenary experience.

The purpose of this award is to provide scholarship assistance to a student, preferably a female, who is majoring in Business. The scholarship will be renewed each year dependent on the student’s financial need and satisfactory academic progress.

Harry Strickhausen Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship is made possible by generous donations from Dr. Douglas Schwegel, in memory of his dear friend and partner, Dr. Harry Strickhausen. Professor Strickhausen was a deeply valued, beloved, member of the Centenary community for over 30 years. Among his many accomplishments, Professor Strickhausen was a poet, author, collector, and served as a Gates-Ferry Lecturer.

James Gregory Smith Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the generous donations from Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite, former President of Centenary University, and numerous other donors. James Gregory Smith Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Lewthwaite’s colleagues in loving memory of her brother, James Gregory Smith, who perished in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He was a self-made man, working as an independent trader of preferred stocks at Cantor Fitzgerald. He worked his way through his undergraduate and graduate studies and established a wonderful, loving home and life for his wife and four children. He epitomized the realization of potential on both a personal and professional level.

This award is given to a student who is working hard to realize his potential. The scholarship is awarded to a junior in a business major with a 3.00 cumulative GPA who is in economic need. This award is presented at the Baccalaureate Ceremony.

Jane Barbara Thomas Scholarship in Fashion Merchandising

This scholarship was established in 1978 by Mr. and Mrs. Grady Thomas in memory of their daughter, Jane Barbara Thomas, Class of 1940.

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in fashion and an outstanding student in merchandising. One is given for merchandising and one for design both based on a combination of GPA and contribution to the program.

Lackland Centenary Award

This scholarship is made possible by a generous donation from Carol Burgess Lackland ’54/10 HA and her husband, David Lackland ’10 HA. They are distinguished honorary alumni because of their support and ongoing participation at Centenary University. The Lacklands are benefactors of the David and Carol Lackland Center that houses classrooms, the campus dining room, a 500-seat theater, and the radio and TV stations.

President’s Circle Scholarship

In 1993-1994, 12 alumni were identified and recruited to establish the “Founders” group. These alumni, in conjunction with the President, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the College Relations staff, met in February 1994 for the inaugural meeting of the President’s Circle. The membership of the President’s Circle is diverse in geography, talent and background. The President’s Circle has grown to more than 30 members. The purpose of the President’s Circle is to engage alumni leaders and friends in areas critical to the future of the institution – recruitment, student life, fundraising and the other priorities, as determined by the leadership of Centenary University. The President’s Circle Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in October 2010 to provide scholarships to deserving students at Centenary University. The Scholarship is made possible by the generous donations of the President’s Circle members.

The Raymond Sloan Scholarship in the Arts is made possible by the generous support of Dr. Harold Sloan, in memory of his brother, Raymond Paton Sloan. Susan Bao ENACTUS Scholarship is made possible by generous donations from ENACTUS (formerly, SIFE): The Sam M.
