The Cool Pose: Zoot Suits, Hip Hop and High Fashion
Gary L. Lampley has held many positions throughout his career in the Fashion Industry and he brings his years of apparel experience into the classroom as a faculty member at the Fashion Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the examination of dress, adornment and the appearance of African Americans during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and analyzes their fashion influences.
With his research, Lampley has gained a strong theoretical foundation in cultural studies and material history. It has provided him with an understanding of African American fashion broadly as an aspect of material culture and of African American history. Lampley’s work challenges others to explore the coded meanings behind clothing and fashion movements within society, culture and history.
