Suyeon YangCentenary Alumna Secures a Spot in Prestigious Graduate Program

Hackettstown, N.J.- Su Yeon Yang, a Centenary University graduate who is originally from Seoul, Korea, is the third Centenary University graduate to attend the prestigious Rutgers University Master of Arts program in Political Science: United Nations and Global Policy.  Yang will be attending this program this fall.

Yang is a 2015 graduate of Centenary University who majored in Global Studies with a concentration in Global Security Studies.  She came to Centenary University from Hoseo University after enrolling in the College’s Summer Culture and Language Program.  She is currently a resident of Palisades Park, N.J.

“I loved Centenary so much that I decided to transfer here,” says Yang.  “Once I enrolled in the Global Studies program, I was inspired to pursue this field.  One of my favorite classes was Dr. Shane Fitzpatrick’s Model United Nations course.  I felt supported and encouraged at Centenary University and that has allowed me to continue to succeed in reaching my goals.”

After she graduated, she worked at the ICN Group in New York City as an International Student Advisor.  In this role, she served as facilitator for students who were interested in studying in the United States.  After Yang finishes graduate school, she aspires to work at the United Nations, a non-profit or diplomacy organization or for the Korean government.

“In the Model NATO class, Suyeon represented Turkey during difficult negotiations over if NATO should arm the Kurds to fight against the Islamic State,” says Dr. Shane Fitzpatrick, Associate Professor of Political Science and International Studies at Centenary University.  “She was exceptional and earned the Best Representative prize in the class.  I knew then that she was ready for graduate study.”

Founded in 1867 by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church, Centenary University is an independent, coeducational liberal arts and career studies college distinguished by an accomplished faculty, small class sizing and diverse student body.  Centenary is the only baccalaureate and master’s degree granting institution in northwest New Jersey.

Centenary University’s main campus is located in Hackettstown, N.J. with its equestrian facility in Washington Township (Morris County).  The Centenary University School of Professional Studies offers degree programs in the following locations: Parsippany, Edison, and at corporate sites throughout New Jersey.  The School of International Programs recruits international students for study at Centenary and Centenary students for study abroad opportunities.
