Hackettstown, N.J., February 27, 2017- Did you know that Centenary University will be celebrating its 150^th anniversary this year? Founded in 1867, Centenary University has continued to thrive as an institution of higher education. Centenary’s own Dr. Raymond Frey, Professor of History and University Historian, will present a lecture about the history of Centenary University in conjunction with the Hackettstown Historical Society on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. This free presentation will take place at the American Legion, located at 494 Willow Grove Street, Hackettstown, N.J., 07840.

“I look forward to telling the story of Centenary University,” says Dr. Frey. “Centenary’s history has been a part of Hackettstown’s history for over 150 years. I’m pleased that the Hackettstown Historical Society has invited me to share it with the community.”

Dr. Raymond Frey has taught at Centenary University since 1990 and serves as University Historian. Dr. Frey holds graduate degrees in history and philosophy from Fordham University and Drew University. He has prepared two White House briefing documents on first lady Bess Truman for First Lady Laura Bush and has also contributed chapters in “Life in the White House: A Social History of the First Family and the President’s House, American First Ladies, and the Presidential Companion.”

In 2002, Dr. Frey was the keynote speaker at the Truman Presidential Library, commemorating Bess Truman’s birthday. He moderated a panel of presidential scholars discussing President Truman’s security legacy at the Truman Little White house in Key West, Florida, in 2003 and in 2004, and presented a paper entitled “Truman’s Speech to the NAACP.”

Professor Frey is the author of a recent history of Centenary University published by Arcadia Press; the first history of the University written since 1947. He has also written a widely-used textbook on New Jersey history for middle school students.
