CENTENARY CELEBRATES ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY BY PLACING BANNERS ACROSS HACKETTSTOWN
Hackettstown, N.J., March 31, 2017 – Centenary is celebrating an important milestone this year as the institution was founded 150 years ago. Many events are occurring throughout this year to highlight this important accomplishment. In addition, an initiative was recently implemented where Hackettstown businesses sponsored special 150th anniversary banners that are being displayed throughout the streets of Hackettstown.
“This is an exciting time in the history of the institution,” says John Carno, Vice President for University Advancement at Centenary University. “I am quite pleased to have worked closely with Jim Sheldon, Executive Director of the Hackettstown Business Improvement District (BID) to secure sponsors for the 150th anniversary banners. It has also been wonderful to have such staunch support of Hackettstown Mayor Maria DiGiovanni. I hope the local community and beyond enjoy seeing this change to the street landscape during their travels. I also encourage members of the community to come to our 150th anniversary celebrations. We are offering opportunities for everyone to enjoy.”
Forty-three banners grace Main Street and Mountain Avenue. The banners include the names of the sponsors. They will continue to be displayed there for the remainder of the year. Half of the sponsorship fee will be donated back to the town of Hackettstown and the other half will offset the cost of producing and installing the banners.
“The banners are an important project to celebrate Centenary’s longstanding commitment with the town of Hackettstown, and they represent an important milestone in the history of the town itself,” says Sheldon. “The Hackettstown business community is pleased to have Centenary University as a key institution in our community. We are both allies and entities who seek to continue to make this a thriving environment for the region.”
Upcoming events in the near future that are open to the community include a book reading and signing on April 18, 2017 from Michael Callahan’s book “The Night She Won America,” which is based on the story of Bette Cooper, a Centenary student who won the Miss America pageant in 1937 and Centenary’s 10th Anniversary Earth Day Celebration on April 22, 2017.
