At the heart of every film is a story. Centenary University gives you the opportunity to make it your story.
Centenary’s Film Studies concentration focuses on the idea of the filmmaker as a storyteller. Through studying cinematic history and cutting-edge film-making techniques, you will discover how film can entertain, enlighten and capture history as it happens.
Within our Film Studies curriculum, topics include digital filmmaking techniques, global cinema, famous movie directors, best documentaries and independent film, literature to film and film & philosophy. Throughout these courses, you will learn how cinema has mirrored the political, social, and economic realities of various time periods.
Our Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Communication, Film Studies concentration graduates will be prepared to go on to graduate programs as well as work in the industry alongside film crews, as film critics and as teachers and faculty members.
This concentration also teaches important skills for Communication students who pursue careers in advertising, public relations and corporate communications. Storytelling on the small screen is often an essential part of these careers.
Centenary’s small classes allow for freewheeling discussion and close collaboration between students and professors. Our faculty’s goal is to broaden students’ horizons and help fine-tune their skills and points of view.
As far as practical filmmaking skills, you will explore the director’s vision, the use of lighting, color, black and while, camera angles and lenses, editing, pacing, script writing, special effects, casting and acting and why popular film quotes make an impact.
