Therapeutic Riding at Centenary (TRAC)

TRAC provides equine-assisted services (EAS) to individuals with special needs and develops leaders for the EAS industry. Established in 2003, TRAC is recognized as a Premier Accredited Center and Higher Education member by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.).

TRAC provides equine-assisted services four – five days per week, year-round, 46 weeks per year. In 2024, TRAC served 95 individuals with special needs, which included:

  • 25 riders with physical and cognitive disabilities, participating weekly in therapeutic riding. Riders cite benefits such as improved balance, coordination, sensory integration, and joy.

  • 23 military veterans coping with homelessness and addiction recovery. Veterans learn new skills, form community connections, and are uplifted by the company of horses.

  • 18 summer campers with special needs, children and adults. Summer campers develop social-emotional skills, learn to ride, and learn about basic horse care.

  • 3 children with literacy challenges. Horse Powered Reading embraces a kinesthetic approach, fostering motivation and connection while improving academic outcomes.

  • 16 individuals, special populations. Through equine-assisted learning field trips, visitors learn new skills and applicable mindfulness techniques by interacting with our herd.

In addition to its impactful direct services, TRAC’s reach extends further through the training of future EAS-industry professionals. TRAC is housed by Centenary University’s Equine Studies Department, where students can take courses and even earn a degree in Equine Studies, Therapeutic Horsemanship Management. TRAC serves as an in-house practicum site where students fulfill requirements to become certified as PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors (CTRI) and/or Equine Specialists in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL). With these qualifications, graduates are employed and making a positive difference in the EAS industry nationwide.
