Scholarships are made available to Centenary students through the generous contributions of donors and friends of Centenary University. These scholarships are awarded by the University. There is no separate application process associated with the awarding of these awards unless indicated otherwise.

Affinity Federal Credit Union Foundation

Awarded to a student from New Jersey transferring into Centenary with a junior or senior status, based on need. Preference should be given to students transferring to Centenary from the County College of Morris.

ALICE Workforce Training Scholarship

The Women’s Leadership Council Scholarship has been established to assist female, non-traditional students from Warren County with expenses related to education. The United Way of Northern New Jersey helps to provide the financial resources necessary to get women enrolled in educational programs which lead directly to immediate employment, thus enabling these women to financially support themselves and their families.

The applicant must be a female aged 21+ as of the first day of the semester for which the scholarship is being awarded; must be a resident of Warren County prior to applying for this scholarship; must be transferring directly from Warren County Community College to Centenary University; must be a full-time student enrolled or enrolling in a degree program which will lead directly to employment (scholarship cannot be used for “enrichment” classes, seminars or for “extra” classes offered to hone specific skills in a currently help position); both financial need and potential for program completion will be taken to account in the selection of award recipients; scholarships will be granted at the discretion of Centenary University; potential applicants who contact the United Way office will be directed to the Transfer Office at Centenary University.

Arden Davis Melick ’60 and Bernice Spies Davis ’31 Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by generous donations from Chairman of the Board of Trustees Arden Davis Melick ‘60 in memory of her mother, Bernice Spies Davis, class of ’31. In 2006, the Centenary Board of Trustees elected Ms. Melick chairman. Ms. Melick is the longest serving member of the Board of Trustees, and she is the first alumna/us to serve as chairman of the board. She is also the first woman to hold this position. Ms. Melick is also member of Centenary’s President’s Circle. Her mother, Bernice Spies Davis, was a member of the first graduating class of Centenary’s Junior College and national president of Centenary’s Alumni Association.

The scholarship recipient will be selected from students in the top 20% of their class, with preference given to a female New Jersey resident.

A competitive scholarship opportunity, the BD Scholarship supports students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to a career in the healthcare industry.

The scholarship recipient will be selected from juniors and seniors with at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA who demonstrate interest in the healthcare industry. Financial need may be considered in selection.

Beal-Sargent Endowed Scholarship

This award is made possible by a generous donation from Susan Beals Sargent ’65. Bertha Florey Sloan Scholarship in Business

The Bertha Florey Sloan Scholarship in Business is made possible by the generous support of Dr. Harold Sloan, in memory of his wife, Bertha Florey Sloan, Class of 1905. Dr. Harold Sloan met Bertha Florey while they both attended The Centenary Collegiate Institute. Upon Bertha Florey’s graduation, Harold left at the same time for further schooling. Shortly after Bertha’s death in 1979, Dr. Sloan established the Bertha Florey Sloan Scholarship Fund. Following the death of his brother, Raymond Paton Sloan, Dr. Sloan established a scholarship in his name as well.

Centenary University Criminal Justice Student Achievement Award

This award is made possible by the generous donations from members of Centenary University’s Criminal Justice Department. The award was created in memory of Nicholas J. Magos, Sr., Deputy Chief of Detectives, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and graduate of Centenary University, Class of 2006.

This award is given to a graduating senior that is majoring in Criminal Justice or Sociology: concentration in Criminal Justice; who has attained a GPA of 3.2 or higher; has demonstrated involvement and leadership in the Criminal Justice Program; and has demonstrated intent to seek employment within the Criminal Justice system; or continue on to Criminal Justice graduate studies upon graduation. Additionally, the recipient must have a clean academic and student record and may be full-time, part-time, or transfer student. This award is presented at the Baccalaureate Ceremony.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by a generous donation from the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation dedicated to women who have exhausted other sources of funding but who are close to realizing their academic goals and beginning a new career.

The scholarship recipient will be selected from students with financial need who are at least 25 years of age and who have completed at least half of the requirements for their degree. A majority of the funds from this Foundation will be directed to undergraduate women enrolled in a four-year degree programs. However, awards may be made to women enrolled in second Bachelor’s degree programs and certificate programs. The Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship may be awarded to women enrolled in Master’s degree programs; however, it must be clear that the degree is necessary to enable the candidate to gain employment or maintain or improve her employment situation

Comprehensive Group Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the generous donations from The Comprehensive Asset Management and Servicing, Inc., and its President, Timothy L. Smith. Mr. Smith is a former trustee of the Centenary Board of Trustees.

There are two awards offered within this scholarship: The first award is available to to an incoming freshman with a declared theater major. The second award is available to an incoming freshman with significant financial need.

Cutler and Swenson Award in Social and Behavioral Sciences

Dallas Family Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the generous support of David Dallas, Centenary Trustee, and his brother, Robert H. Dallas, II. The purpose of this award is to provide students majoring in Business Administration with scholarship assistance to help them succeed throughout their education career at Centenary.

This scholarship is renewable for the sophomore year providing that the student maintains continuous full-time enrollment, satisfactory academic progress, and at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA. The scholarship is renewable for the junior and senior year providing that the student maintains continuous full-time enrollment, satisfactory academic progress, and at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA.

Deo Volente Farms Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the generous donation received from Michael Gulotta ’90 HA. The purpose of this restricted scholarship fund shall be to provide scholarship support to qualified, deserving undergraduate students enrolled or planning to enroll at Centenary University. Consideration for this scholarship shall be given to all undergraduate students who meet the following criteria: Reside in Hunterdon County; Demonstrates financial need; Strong academic credentials as evidenced by a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or better; Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteer or community service for non-profit or community organizations; Intent to enroll in a specific academic discipline is not a requirement, but preference may be given to students intending to enroll in business, math, or equine studies. Recipients of this scholarship shall be selected by the Office of Financial Aid based on input and recommendations from the Office of Admissions.

Diane “DD” Sillcocks ’54 Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the generous donations received from and on behalf of Mr. Warren B. Sillcocks ’01 HA, in memory of his wife, Diane “DD” Sillcocks ‘54, a former member of the President’s Circle and the Alumni Association Executive Board. DD amazed everyone with her enthusiasm for Centenary and her ability to translate it into action. DD was a model “ambassador” for Centenary, and worked tirelessly to promote the university among its alumni.

Douglas Wolfe Turrell Memorial Community Service Award

This scholarship is made possible by generous donations from Sally Wolfe Turrell ‘52 and her family in memory of the loving son, Douglas Wolfe, who was attending college when he passed away in 1993.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to continuing students who excel in community service, this having been one of Douglas’ primary interests. This scholarship is made possible by the generous gifts from an anonymous alumnus. The Dr. Charles Frederickson Award is in honor of Dr. Frederickson, Professor of Psychology at Centenary University and esteemed member of the Centenary community for twenty-nine years.

This award is given to a student who exemplifies Dr. Frederickson’s high ethical behavior and leadership skills that enables others to make positive life-choices. Elaine Stewart Tyrrell Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by generous donations from Arthur D. Tyrrell, Jr. and other donors. These gifts are given in honor of Arthur’s wife, Elaine Stewart Tyrrell, who passed away from ALS in 2013. Elaine graduated from West Morris Central High School in 1984, Stockton State College with her B.A. in criminal justice in 1988, and William Paterson College with her M.A. in social sciences in 1995. In 1988, Elaine was hired by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, where she met her loving husband, Arthur. In 1993, Elaine was promoted to detective and graduated from the police academy. Elaine retired from the Prosecutor’s Office as a Detective Sergeant in June 2013. In addition to being an active volunteer within her community, Elaine was a member of Centenary’s part-time faculty. Elaine often expressed her love for teaching at Centenary.

The recipient must be a senior majoring in Criminal Justice and who demonstrates the desire and intent to pursue a career in Criminal Justice.

Elizabeth Dickinson Dunlap Scholarship

The Elizabeth Dickinson Dunlap Scholarship is made possible by the generous donations from Elizabeth Dickinson Dunlap ’44 and her family. At the time Elizabeth was attending, both of her parents were deceased and scholarship assistance was what allowed her to attend College. This scholarship was established to thank Centenary for the educational opportunity and to make it possible for others to enjoy a similar Centenary experience.

The purpose of this award is to provide scholarship assistance to a student, preferably a female, who is majoring in Business. The scholarship will be renewed each year dependent on the student’s financial need and satisfactory academic progress.

Elmer E. Pearce Speech Prize

This prize is made possible by the generous donations made by Betty Ann Leith, daughter of Elmer Ellsworth Pearce. Mr. Pearce served as Vice President of Centenary’s Board of Trustees during the 1950’s. Not only was his legacy highlighted by his daughter Betty Ann, but also by his daughter, Winifred Pearce Wooding, class of 1937, and granddaughter, Leslie Wooding , Class of 1971. (Side bar: In 1951, Mr. Pearce stood beside Charles A. Van Winkle as he presented the College with an original step of the White House. It currently stands in the center of the quad, where it serves as the base for the brass sundial which was received as a gift from the class of 1905.)

The prize is presented to the student who has shown the greatest improvement in speech. The recipient is selected by the Communication & Fine Arts Faculty. This award is presented at the Baccalaureate Ceremony.

The H. Graham Dubois Award for Literature is made possible by the generous support of Edie Bolte Kutz, Class of 1942. The H. Graham DuBois Award for Literature was established in honor of Dr. DuBois, a past Chair of Centenary’s English Department, and Mrs. DuBois.
The scholarship is awarded to a student who exhibits a genuine affection for literature and excels in scholarship and research, ability for critical analysis, ability to understand and relate to literature concepts, creative thinking, and imaginative writing. Harry J. Strickhausen Award for Excellence in Writing

This award is made possible by the generous support of Dr. Douglas Schwegel and the English & Foreign Languages department. This award was established in honor of Dr. Schwegel’s partner and life-long friend, Professor Emeritus Harry Strickhausen, who taught English at Centenary for 30 years.

This is presented annually to recognize outstanding achievement in student writing within an academic program. Faculty members are invited to submit one piece of a student’s writing submitted for any course each academic year. The submissions are judged by a panel from the English & Foreign Languages faculty and the winner or winners are announced at the English & Foreign Languages Department Awards Ceremony. This award is presented at the English Department Ceremony.

James Gregory Smith Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by the generous donations from Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite, former President of Centenary University, and numerous other donors. James Gregory Smith Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Lewthwaite’s colleagues in loving memory of her brother, James Gregory Smith, who perished in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He was a self-made man, working as an independent trader of preferred stocks at Cantor Fitzgerald. He worked his way through his undergraduate and graduate studies and established a wonderful, loving home and life for his wife and four children. He epitomized the realization of potential on both a personal and professional level.

This award is given to a student who is working hard to realize his potential. The scholarship is awarded to a junior in a Business major with a 3.00 cumulative GPA who is in economic need. This award is presented at the Baccalaureate Ceremony.

Jane Barbara Thomas Scholarship in Fashion Merchandising

This scholarship was established in 1978 by Mr. and Mrs. Grady Thomas in memory of their daughter, Jane Barbara Thomas, Class of 1940.

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in fashion and an outstanding student in merchandising. One is given for merchandising and one for design both based on a combination of GPA and contribution to the program.

Jerome Kaiser Part-Time Business Student Award

The Jerome Kaiser Part time Business Student Award is made possible by the generous support from Rita Quade. The fund was established with a gift from Mrs. Quade in memory of her brother, Jerome Kaiser. Mrs. Quade is the widow of Centenary University’s beloved Professor Robert Quade.

The Jones Group, Inc. (formerly Jones Apparel Group), is an American designer, marketer and wholesaler of famous brands of clothing, shoes and accessories. Jones Group has provided scholarship support to Centenary University for over ten years.

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student within Communication & Fine Arts program majoring in Fashion/Fashion Merchandising. The recipient is selected by the Director of Financial Aid and the Communication & Fine Arts faculty.

Lackland Centenary Award

This scholarship is made possible by a generous donation from Carol Burgess Lackland ’54/10 HA and her husband, David Lackland ’10 HA. They are distinguished honorary alumni because of their support and ongoing participation at Centenary University. The Lacklands are benefactors of the David and Carol Lackland Center that houses classrooms, the campus dining room, a 500-seat theater, and the radio and TV stations.

The scholarship recipient will selected from students with financial need who graduated in good standing from Hackettstown High School and have demonstrated an interest in extracurricular activities. If no qualified students from Hackettstown High School apply, the scholarship(s) may be awarded to a student who qualifies, lives in Hackettstown, but attended West Morris HS, Mt. Olive HS, or Warren Hills HS. The scholarship is renewable up to 4 years dependent on the student’s financial need and satisfactory academic progress.

Perricone Family Sports Management Award

The Perricone Family Sports Management Award is made possible by the generous support of David Perricone, Centenary University faculty member, the Perricone family, and numerous donors. This award was established by David’s father, Anthony M. Perricone, an avid sports fan, semi-pro league baseball player, coach, and community volunteer. Upon his passing, the Perricone family decided to honor his legacy by continuing the Perricone Family Sports management Award.

The scholarship is awarded to a Sports Management major to assist with tuition. The scholarship recipient is based on merit.

President’s Circle Scholarship

In 1993-1994, 12 alumni were identified and recruited to establish the “Founders” group. These alumni, in conjunction with the President, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the College Relations staff, met in February 1994 for the inaugural meeting of the President’s Circle. The membership of the President’s Circle is diverse in geography, talent and background. The President’s Circle has grown to more than 30 members. The purpose of the President’s Circle is to engage alumni leaders and friends in areas critical to the future of the institution – recruitment, student life, fundraising and the other priorities, as determined by the leadership of Centenary University. The President’s Circle Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in October 2010 to provide scholarships to deserving students at Centenary University. The Scholarship is made possible by the generous donations of the President’s Circle members.

Raymond Sloan Scholarship in the Arts

The Raymond Sloan Scholarship in the Arts is made possible by the generous support of Dr. Harold Sloan, in memory of his brother, Raymond Paton Sloan. Dr. Sloan was married to Bertha Florey, Class of 1905. They met while attending The Centenary Collegiate Institute. (This award was preceded by the establishment of Bertha Florey Sloan Scholarship in Business.)

This scholarship is awarded to one outstanding returning full-time student in Art & Design, and one outstanding full-time student in the Graphic Design Program, who have demonstrated high scholarship in conjunction with a strong interest in the arts.

Raymonde Maurice Award

The Raymonde Maurice award was inaugurated in 1996 in loving memory of Raymonde Maurice, Class of 1989, by John and Kate Shayner ‘80/’82. (After Dr. Shayner’s passing in 2009, Billie Blackwell, Centenary’s Athletic Director, vowed to continue this award).

The recipient is the individual who most personifies the qualities of Raymonde Maurice: commitment to the college, devotion to duty, love for humanity, and fidelity to Christian values. In particular, the recipient must be in need of scholarship and should be one who has clearly demonstrated that he or she has taken full advantage of the opportunity for a Centenary education. This award is presented at the Baccalaureate Ceremony.

Richard A. Dennis Scholarship

The Richard A. Dennis Endowed Scholarship is made possible by the generous donations from his wife, Anne Dennis, colleagues, and friends, in honor of Mr. Dennis’ commitment and service to career, family, community and education. Mr. Dennis served on the Board of Trustees from 1983 until 1988.

Susan Bao ENACTUS Scholarship is made possible by generous donations from ENACTUS (formerly, SIFE): The Sam M.
