HACKETTSTOWN, NJ, Oct. 12 – Centenary University welcomed students, staff, community members, and their beloved pets to the University’s Equestrian Center in Long Valley on Thursday, October 1, for the annual Blessing of the Animals.

John Schol, President of Centenary University and a United Methodist bishop, welcomed attendees and thanked them for joining in the Blessing of the Animals, a tradition the University brought back after a brief reprieve.

University chaplain and Pastor Tim Nicinski invoked the blessings upon the animals. Rockwell, a horse from Centenary’s herd, served as a representative for the University’s equine community, including the horses that support Centenary’s nationally recognized equestrian programs.

Community members brought a variety of pets to receive the blessing, including dogs, cats, a ferret, and a pony.

“The Blessing of the Animals reflects St. Francis’ commitment and deep respect for all life, including animals,” said Nicinski. “At Centenary University, well known for its equestrian team and dedicated care of its horses, we encourage our students and the surrounding community to offer the same respect to their animals and pets and to continue the purpose of good stewardship in nature, life, and the environment.”

The Blessing of the Animals reflects Centenary University’s commitment to community, compassion, and custodianship while honoring a tradition that celebrates the important role animals play in the lives of students, families, and the broader community.
