Centenary University Mourns the Loss of Wolfgang Gstattenbauer ’84/’13 (Hon.), Board of Trustees Chair Emeritus

Centenary University mourns the passing of Wolfgang Gstattenbauer ’84/’13 (Hon.), Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees, who passed away on April 17, 2026. The entire Centenary community extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones and honors his many years of extraordinary service, leadership, and dedication to the University.

Wolfgang’s connection to Centenary began in 1979 as a nontraditional student. He earned his Associate of Science in Business Administration in 1984, launching a lifelong relationship with the institution. A United States Navy veteran, he served two distinguished terms on the Board of Trustees from 1990 to 2005 and again from 2008 through 2020. Upon his retirement as Board Chair, Rochelle A. Makela-Goodman was elected to the role effective January 1, 2021, and Wolfgang was named Chair Emeritus.

During his tenure, Wolfgang played a vital role in shaping Centenary’s governance, including contributing to the original construction of the University’s Constitution and guiding its evolution over time. As Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, he championed initiatives that strengthened curriculum, faculty governance, and academic quality.

Professionally, Wolfgang spent 29 years with M&M/Mars International, rising to Operations Director and retiring in 1997 as Personnel Director overseeing eight manufacturing plants across the United States. He was also deeply committed to his community, serving with the Hackettstown Chamber of Commerce, the Warren County Economic Development Committee, and as former Chairman of the Sussex County American Cancer Society, among other roles.

Wolfgang’s legacy is one of integrity, leadership, and lasting impact. His contributions to Centenary University will be felt for generations to come.
