The American National Riding Commission, Inc. (ANRC) was established in 2006 to continue the goals and activities of the Affiliated National Riding Commission, which existed as part of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) for more than 60 years.

The original purpose was to initiate a standardized method to educate riders in hunt seat equitation and to create a “Rider Certification” system to assess riding ability and knowledge of riding theory. ANRC continues to support these goals with competitions, clinics, and distribution of educational materials.

The ANRC is an affiliate of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA).

Centenary University has been a member institution of the ANRC since 2002. Centenary participates annually in the ANRC National Intercollegiate Equitation Championship, where each college brings a team of their top riders to compete in the following four phases:

  • A Program Ride (includes USEF Equitation Tests)
  • A Hunter Seat Equitation Medal Course at 3’as well as 2’6”
  • A Derby Course (natural jumps in a field) at 3’ as well as 2’6”
  • A Written test based on riding theory and stable management

Students may compete on a college-owned horse or a privately owned horse. The highest score in each phase is awarded to the rider who produces the most smooth and cooperative performance.

When Centenary is not hosting the national finals, the coaches, Tara Clausen and Michael Dowling bring this hand-picked team of riders across the country to compete against the top colleges and universities. Centenary’s team has won many titles at the ANRC National Championship including most recently:
