Dr. Compton is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and received the Centenary Distinguished Teaching Award in 2024.  He started as an adjunct at Warren County Community College before joining Centenary University as an adjunct. Also, during this time, Dr. Compton served as a police officer for Washington Township Police Department (Morris County) beginning his career in 1994 and retiring in 2020 with 26 years in law enforcement.

Upon graduating from the Morris County Public Safety Academy in 1994, Dr. Compton was assigned to the Patrol Division.  During this time, he also served as a DARE officer, field training officer, and detective.  In 2002, he was promoted to sergeant and served as a patrol supervisor responsible for a squad of five officers.   He served time as both the supervisor of the Community Services and Traffic Units. In 2011, he was promoted to lieutenant, where he served as commander of each of the following divisions: Patrol, Support, and Administrative. During his time as a lieutenant, he was responsible for department budgeting; he served as public information officer (PIO); and he managed the department’s social media, fleet procurement, Open Public Records Act (OPRA) and discovery requests, Internal Affairs, grants, recruitment, and served as Field Training Coordinator.
