Hackettstown, N.J., April 24, 2017– Members of Alpha Theta Psi Sorority at Centenary University volunteered at Newark GALS, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering the next generation of women from Newark, New Jersey and beyond. The representatives of Centenary’s chapter of Alpha Theta Psi engaged participants in various activities and discussions about self-confidence, inner and outer beauty, and future goals and aspirations. As female college students, sorority members promoted a collaborative learning experience in which they could share knowledge, advice, and encouragement with younger girls.

​ The mission of Newark G.A.L.S., Inc. is to enhance the productivity and accomplishments of Newark’s girls and young women by providing them with core services including educational and career planning, recreational and cultural experiences, and social guidance and skills. Mentors can work one-on-one with participants to establish a sisterly relationship in which both parties can grow and learn from one another. Alpha Theta Psi at Centenary University has established a unique relationship with Newark G.A.L.S., Inc.

The sorority serves as a network and support to the younger G.A.L.S. through a program called Knowledge for College. Other programs include GirlsRock@Reading, a book group that examines female protagonists and self-growth; Life Skills Academy, in which participants explore time management, study skills, conflict resolution, etiquette essentials, health and wellness and more; and Glam Gals Fashion & Beauty Institute, a course that prepares interested participants for a career in fashion and provides tips for everyday beauty.

Gianna Ross, President of Theta Alpha Psi at Centenary University, says, ““Being able to speak and interact with the young ladies at Newark G.A.L.S. Inc. was such a rewarding experience. These young ladies were engaged the whole time and willing to learn. It felt good to be able to connect with the girls by sharing our past experiences and advice with them, and letting them know that regardless of the struggles or situations they are going through, they are not alone. They are our future leaders and their success begins with our ability to raise strong, confident young girls.”

Founded in 1867 by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church, Centenary University’s academic program integrates a solid liberal arts foundation with a strong career orientation. This mix is designed to provide an educational experience that prepares students to succeed in the increasingly global and interdependent world.

Centenary University’s main campus is located in Hackettstown, N.J., with its equestrian facility in Washington Township (Morris County). The Centenary School of Professional Studies offers degree programs online and in two locations: Parsippany and Edison, online, as well as corporate sites throughout New Jersey.
