Concentrations

Students are able to select an area of concentration within their Bachelor’s Degree program in order to specialize in their future career paths. We offer eight areas of concentration so our graduates are trained and ready to work in the theatre industry.

Centenary’s proximity to New York City and the existence of an equity theatre in residence offers students a unique opportunity to develop skills in a professional atmosphere. Students have the opportunity to explore theatre as an academic discipline and participate in acting, technical theatre and theatre production activities through the Centenary Stage Company, join the Equity Membership Candidate program, and earn credits toward acceptance into the Actors Equity Association, the professional union of actors. Student productions are also presented through the Theatre’s Next Stage Rep program. In addition, students have the opportunity to tour with the University’s Theatre For Young Audience Touring Company, presenting children’s theatre productions and workshops throughout the tri-state. A minor is also available in Theatre Arts for interested students in other programs.

A Unique Opportunity

Centenary’s Theatre program is run under the direction of Carl Wallnau, who also serves as artistic director of the Centenary Stage Company. This unique relationship means our students can:

• Participate in acting, technical theatre, dance and theatre production activities through Centenary Stage.
• Join the Equity Membership Candidate (EMC) program and earn credits toward acceptance into the Actors Equity Association, the professional union of actors.
• Take advantage of the state-of-the-art Lackland Center. Opened in 2010, the center includes a 500-seat theatre (Sitnik Theater), a black box theatre (The Edith Bolte Kutz ’42 Theater), a dance studio, scene shop, costume shop, green room and dressing rooms.

Our proximity to New York brings working actors, professional designers, directors and theatre artists on campus. By observing the work ethic of these performers and developing a network, students get a step ahead in their theatre careers. Students can also take advantage of internships and professional development opportunities in New York, the theatre capital of the world.

Although much of our Theatre program mirrors the intensity of a conservatory program, our liberal arts emphasis ensures you will graduate with a broad-range of skills. In fact, many of our students double major, minor in other areas, study abroad, and experience all aspects of what college has to offer.
